Ian Played Club Baseball When He Joined OU Honors College. He wanted More.
Ian Cleary is Student-Athlete at Oakland U Honors College
Ian Cleary is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences at Oakland University Honors College in Michigan.
In high school he was a member of the school’s baseball varsity team.
Club Baseball
When he came to Oakland U, he wasn’t planning on playing baseball. He thought he would just play intramural or club sports.
So, that's what he did, when he got to college.
He played club baseball and he thought it was great. He loved the people on the team and they were nice to him.
About 2-3 weeks later, he realized that much as the people were very friendly and fun, club baseball did not do it for him.
It wasn't satisfying for him. It didn’t give him what he was looking for.
Division I Team
He reached out to his college’s Coach of the Division I Baseball Team and told him he wanted to play for him. Ian then gave him his resume and references.
A few tryouts later, Ian made the team!
There were challenges, however!
Being a Student Athlete
Ian’s college life became super structured and scheduled.
Time Commitment.
Ian had to 20 hours of practice during the baseball season and 8 hours in the off season.
Juggling Classes and Games.
Ian’s Professors were informed of the games schedule at the start of the season. So, there was homework to do on the road, make up tests and missing out on the class interactions.
Mental and Physical Stress.
The expectations of having to play at the highest level in Division I, driving to improve your game every day can take its toll. That combined with the just the physical grind is a lot to endure.
Ian has done a masterful job of managing his commitments and responsibilities and having a great Honors College experience.
