How Haylie's Evolving Interests Shaped Her Major
Haylie Schramm is a Junior at University of Colorado Boulder
Haylie Schramm is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Haylie’s Majors’ journey has been organic over the years starting in High School.
1.Initial High School Years
During her first 2 years of high school, Haylie really thought that she wanted to do STEM:
She was always more “math inclined”.
She thought she needed to go into Engineering or something.
Her parents always told her that she should go into Engineering.
She was even part of a STEM Engineering program called L2k.
And so she did a lot of research in there, setting up her own experiments.
Lots of research, lots of research papers.
2.High School Junior Year
It was about this time that Haylie came to a realization that she didn't really enjoy STEM.
It was just something that came a little easier to her,
But she didn't really want to do much with it in the future.
Then, during the last half of her Junior year, COVID happened.
And during that time in 2020, there was a lot of political unrest in the United States;
And just learning about that and getting involved in a lot of that political “stuff”was super interesting to her, and
She liked it way more than she liked anything to do with STEM.
So she started to think Political Science and then maybe go into law after that!
3.The Senior Year
In her Senior Year of High School, she took AP Psychology.
She really liked that class,
And got a pretty good score on the AP exam.
So, maybe a week before class started in college,
She decided to add Psychology as a major in addition to Political Science.
4.College
In her second year, instead of being more focused on Political Science, she shifted towards more Sociology, which she liked.
She engaged in Undergraduate Research that was looking to build a threat assessment for targeted violence in schools, specifically CU Boulder.
As she compiled a lot of research from school shootings, targeted violence, and a lot of other threat assessments,
Haylie saw a number of findings relating to the behaviors of people who commit acts of targeted violence, and
The kind of warning signs to look out for, and
Hopefully, stop these incidents of targeted violence occurring.
Right now, she is thinking Clinical Psychology.
