Kimber Cheek graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Anthropological Sciences from Radford University Honors College.
A Cool Course
One of the courses offered at Radford Honors College was called Evolution: the Board Game.
It was a multi-disciplinary course.
There were students from Honors, Anthropology and Biology.
It was co-taught by Dr. Cassady Urista, who is an anthropologist and a biologist.
The Learning
First, there was a one week Crash Course bootcamp on Evolution, and the mechanisms of evolution.
And then they did a one week crash course boot camp, on Design.
Homework for this semester, outside of the main project was
Playing board games, and
Learning board game mechanics.
Group Project
Then the students were divided into groups.
Kimber was paired up with a computer scientist and two biologists.
And each group had to design a board game that properly or as close to properly portrayed the mechanics of evolution as possible.
And then each group presented their games to the class.
Picking One
As a class, they picked one game, and
Worked on making a functional board game!
Presenting at a Conference
The professors and the college wanted to present the game that the class designed at the Honors conference, and talk about the board game design as a pedagogical technique.
They wanted student volunteers to go with them.
Strangely, no one but Kimber volunteered!
So, at the 2017 National Honors Conference, Dr. Davis hosted a panel discussion on board game design and pedagogy techniques, and Kimber provided the student perspective.
A cool course, and a super-cool opportunity to present to such an audience!
