Counselor Edition: Announcing Summer Workbooks for College Applications
Launching April 15, 2024 for Rising Seniors and Juniors
Sean Kennedy is the Co-Director of College Counseling at Ravenscroft School, and President of SACAC.
1.The Backstory
On a call with Sean early this year, I was brainstorming some ideas about using my Podcast College Stories.
Sean suggested doing a Summer Curriculum for College Application, that College Counselors could use or provide their students and parents.
The College Application Workbooks for the Summer was born.
2.Why Workbook?
As you all know, for the last 4 years, I have been producing College Stories on my Podcast “College Matters. Alma Matters.”.
There are 100s of College stories with Students, Alumni, Faculty, Counselors, and Educators. These stories have learnings and insights that can power many college journeys.
The Workbooks are a perfect vehicle to bring those Podcast learnings & insights about college in an Easy-to-Utilize way to high schoolers.
3.What’s in the Workbooks?
It consists of 2 Step-by-Step Workbooks with Worksheets for Rising Seniors and Juniors, plus Companion Notes for Counselors.
Workbook 1: Build Your College List
Don’t work off other people’s college list, instead figure out what you want in your college.
This Workbook uses a New Approach using stories from the Podcast College Matters. Alma Matters. to help you do exactly that!
Workbook 2: Present Your “Best-Self” on the College Application
A common challenge is not knowing what content you need to actually fill out your College Application;
How much content should you add? Because you are told that the readers in the Admissions Office typically have only 8 minutes to read the entire thing?
This Workbook will help you work through these, so that your college application is not only coherent, but compelling!
4.Time Guidelines for Workbooks
Here are the time guidelines for students:
Workbook 1: 5 weeks, and
Workbook 2: 5 weeks,
At the rate of 2-3 hours per day,
With regular check points to review with the Counselor and/or parents.
In addition, Companion Notes for College Counselors also describes how to use the Workbook in classroom settings and facilitate in-class discussions.
5.How does one get the Workbooks?
The Workbooks are available for sale starting April 15, 2024.
