Co-Op Changed Lynn's Mind About Aerospace Engineering
Lynn Pickering is an U of Cincinnati Alumna
Lynn Pickering recently graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Cincinnati.
Aerospace Engineering
Lynn wanted to study Aerospace Engineering ever since she would go flying with her dad in his two-seater airplane.
So, she joined U of Cincinnati as an Aerospace Engineering major.
She really enjoyed her classes in aerospace engineering, and thought they were very interesting.
Then came the Co-Op rotations at Gulfstream and BMW!
The Co-Op
The rotations were eye-opening for Lynn.
She didn’t feel challenged;
When she looked around at the aerospace engineers, she didn’t want to be doing their jobs upon graduation;
She still found airplanes really interesting;
But, she felt that the interesting problems like being more energy friendly, were already being addressed by the companies.
Lynn wanted to do something that allowed her make a bigger impact. A direct positive impact on the world!
Fuzzy Logic & General Engineering
Undergraduate Research introduced Lynn to Fuzzy Logic.
As part of her undergraduate research, her professor had a big focus on drones, with fuzzy logic and control systems.
Lynn found Machine Learning and Fuzzy Logic very appealing.
She’s using this methodology to work on general engineering applications;
She feels she will be able to have a more direct and positive impact on people's lives;
And eventually make a much bigger impact designing systems for a lot of different applications!
Takeaways
Lynn believes that the Co Op program is one of her biggest experiences;
Without that, she wouldn't have known that aerospace wasn’t the right thing for her;
She might have had to work in aerospace for 5 years or so, to figure that out;
So, thanks to the mandatory Co-op program, she discovered it and was able to act on it.
That, she believes, is a huge advantage over other students and programs!
